XSL Transformation Error with Java and Xalan Parser

Work, Java — Chris on September 17, 2007 at 10:22 am

We provide custom XSL outputs for some of our clients at work. One of the custom outputs started failing when we patched our version of Java. The culprit, make sure your <fo:table-header> tags have content in them. If they are empty, remove the tag altogether.

Get Organized, Use Backpack

Work, Web Apps, Tools, Life — Chris on September 16, 2007 at 5:58 pm

I have been using backpack for about 6 months now, and I love it. I typically write quick notes throughout my day, whether at work or at home, and track daily, weekly and monthly to-do lists. Since I am a web app developer, I often have a browser open, and one of those tabs is usually set aside for backpack. It helps me stay organized with what I have to do between home and work, and keeps me on track with my day-to-day work tasks. It also helps that the interface is intuitive and to the point. I recommend you take it for a test drive today.

Using Wicket

Java — Chris on September 6, 2007 at 4:26 pm

We are a Java shop at work. Recently we decided to adopt a framework that would meet our needs as we begin to phase out some of our legacy code and add new features. We decided to go with Wicket. We will see how it goes over the next few months. My plan is to write about what we learn from it here.

The Millionaire Next Door

Books — Chris on September 4, 2007 at 6:17 pm

I just finished up reading The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas Stanley and William Danko. It’s great read if you are interested in this kind of study and information. Some of the information in the middle of the book is a bit boring, but I like most of the content from the beginning and ending chapters.

One of my favorite sections of the book is when they are describing entrepreneurs and courage. They defined courage as

“behaving in a way that conjures up fear”.

They go on to finish by stating that

“courageous people, entrepreneurs, recognize the fear in what they are doing. But they deal with it. They overcome their fears. That’s why they are successful”.

Great stuff there, and the last case study involving Mr. W is quite humorous too.

Blog Kick Start

Uncategorized — Chris on September 3, 2007 at 11:31 am

Finally, I launched a blog. This has been in the pipe for sometime now. I have a handful of designs that are mostly done, but I decided to just launch with a minimalist layout using an existing Wordpress theme. This blog will be a work in progress in relation to it’s layout. As for content, I hope to post something regularly. What will I post? I plan to write about software development, design, coding, business, startups, books, and anything else that interests me. But those six subjects will be the primary focus. Also, I hope to meet some great people and catch up with old friends through this blog. Let’s see where this takes us.
